12Aeolian Island, Sicily

The Aeolian Islands, north of Sicily in the Tyrrhenian Sea, were formed by volcanic eruptions. Of the eight islands, Lipari is the largest and most welcoming. Visitors can see the fortress, castle, and cathedral that rise above the coastline. In the west, there are thermal springs and mud baths. The northernmost point of the island contains quarries for pumice and obsidian, a black volcanic rock glass.
