Lake Bled, in Slovenia is one of Europe’s most picturesque places to travel. This beautiful little lake is surrounded by hills of the Upper Carniolan region of northwestern Slovenia, where it adjoins the town of Bled. The area is a very popular tourist destination and not far (35km) from Sloveniens capital city, Ljubljana.

Reasons why you should visit Lake Bled

Bled is one of Slovenia’s most popular holiday resorts. The village attracted by romantic honeymooners to backpackers who come for hiking, cycling, water sportsand canyoning. Its emerald green lake, the picturesque church on a small island and a medieval castle nestled against a rocky cliff make this place incomparably beautiful.

St. Moritz in Switzerland – one of the most famous winter sports resort towns worldwide and THE meeting point for the international jet set. Many luxury hotels lure countless tourists to the 5,000-inhabitant community – especially in winter.

But the region around the resort town has much more to offer. At an altitude of around 1.800 meters, Engadine high valley with its many lakes and hiking trails, is a popular summer meeting point for caravan tourists.

Step out of the RV and step into nature. At the foot of the nearly 3,500 meter high Corvatsch mountain lies the Silsersee, perfect for long walks. Thanks to the gradual slopes, it is also suitable for less experienced hikers. A short side trip to the Isola peninsula is well worth it. Here the goat cheese Mascarpin (pronounced „Maschkarpinn“) is manufactured using traditional methods. The recipe comes from a time when cheese cultures in the lab had not yet been discovered, without additives.

After this culinary stop, a trip to the Viamala Gorge about 70 kilometers away is a must. This particular route across the Alps was used back in Roman times. The name of the approximately seven kilometer long section means „bad way“, derived from Romansh, one of the official languages here in the canton of Graubunden.

The way back to St. Moritz is pure driving fun. Via the Julierpass, you arrive at an altitude of almost 2,300 meters accompanied by a picturesque view of the Engadin Valley.

The drive leads down to the small village of Silvaplana. Directly on the banks of the Silvaplana sea, you can relax and unwind after an eventful day.

And when the nights at 1,800 meters get a little chilly, even in summer, it is still worth it to stay overnight at one of the local campsites. The view when you wake up the next morning, impressively shows the charm that caravanning has for many.

There were times when you prepared for a journey you booked a flight, figured out where you’d stash your passport, and (maybe) tossed a guidebook into your bag to do a little research on the plane.

These days, not only will you likely do a bunch of online travel research before you buy a plane ticket, you might even plug phrases like “is it safe to travel to Europe right now” or “is it safe to travel” into Google. You’re not alone. Searches for both of those phrases have gone up over the past few years.

Yet here you are, reading this article and perusing a travel planning website. And although you’re not going to let fear keep you from traveling, you still want to choose a safe destination in which to spend your hard-earned vacation time.

The Institute for Economics and Peace produces an annual report on the safety of countries around the world, called the Global Peace Index GPI. Of the top 25 countries listed on their latest report, 18 are in Europe. In other words, in spite of recent news reports to the contrary, traveling through much of Europe remains one of the safer options for tourists. As a point of reference, for instance, the United States comes in at 103rd on the Global Peace Index.

We’re highlighting here the top 10 safest European countries on the latest GPI – why they rank so highly, and why you might want to visit. Their actual Global Peace Index rank appears in parentheses.

Please keep in mind that in any unfamiliar environment, no matter how its safety is ranked, it’s important to obey local laws and social mores, stay aware of your surroundings, always keep an eye on your valuables, and do your best to avoid looking like an “easy target” for opportunistic thieves. Crime rates may be low, but they’re not non-existent. Travelers are often considered easy marks, so don’t mistake a good rating for an excuse to be cavalier about your own safety.

Here are the ten safest countries in Europe to travel right now.

1Iceland

The beautiful landscape of cliffs in Northern Ireland (Bigstock)

Iceland is one of the safest countries in the world. Crime rate is extremely low and medical care is excellent. However, it is necessary to take precaution when traveling in Iceland due to natural hazards caused by weather and nature, where conditions can change at a moments notice.

Reasons why you should visit Iceland

Safety isn’t the only reason to visit Iceland, of course. Whether it’s for a weekend stopover between Europe and the US or an extended adventure trip, here you will fing the awesome natural beauty, from lagoons and fjords to volcanoes with nearly-unpronounceable names. Go for the warmth of the people and a chance to nuzzle those adorable Icelandic horses. Just remember to keep an eye on the weather or go hiking with a guide.

Here are 10 reasons why Iceland should be on your travel destination list …

2Portugal

The famous old touristic tram in Porto, one of the largest Cities in North Portugal (Bigstock)

Portugal often seems forgotten sitting next to much-larger Spain. Spain comes in at #25 on the Global Peace Index, though, and Portugal is up at #5. Not only that, Portugal jumped from 11th place last year. Rates of violent crime are fairly low throughout the country, though petty thievery is not. Pick-pocketing is not uncommon in the bigger cities, particularly in tourist areas, so it’s a good idea to take the usual precautions with your valuables.

Why should you visit Portugal?

Proximity to popular Spain notwithstanding, Portugal still feels relatively under-appreciated by tourists. That’s a shame, given that its beaches on one side and verdant hills on the other, historic city centers and a world-famous wine industry. With Portugal, you get all the perks of a Mediterranean vacation plus a pretty safe place to visit.

3Austria

The Mountains ski resort in Solden, Austria

Austria rounds out the GPI’s top three, with one of the lowest crime rates in Europe. Popular tourist areas in Austria sometimes see instances of pick-pocketing or scams aimed at travelers, though these are almost never violent crimes. Exercising caution with valuables in busy areas is typically enough to avoid theft.

Reasons why you should visit Austria

Austria’s rich history and culture have drawn visitors for centuries. Immerse yourself in Mozart or “The Sound of Music.” Ascend to lofty heights in the Alps for hiking or skiing or just to soak in the views. Tuck into hearty traditional meals in pubs or raise a toast to fine Austrian wine. Austria has something for everyone, wrapped up in a neat little package.

4Denmark

The Little Mermaid is a bronze statue by Edvard Eriksen sitting on a stone in Kopenhagen

Denmark currently holds the top spot on the UN’s World Happiness Report, so maybe it’s unsurprising that it’s also ranked as the second-safest country in the world. Violent crimes are quite rare, and even pick-pocketing isn’t a terribly common occurrence (though it’s more likely to happen in tourist areas). One of the main safety notes in Denmark is to abide by the no-photography rules in the autonomous area of Christiania in Copenhagen.

Reasons why you should visit Denmark

Head to Denmark to explore fairy-tale castles, snap a million photos of multi-colored houses, ride through pretty and bike-friendly Copenhagen with all the locals, and suddenly become an expert on furniture design. Depending on when you visit, you’ll either embrace the long summer nights or – perhaps – see the Northern Lights. In any event, you’re bound to find plenty of reasons why Danes are so happy.

5Slovenia

If Slovenia doesn’t pop into your head immediately when you think of “safe places to go in Europe,” you’re probably not alone. Part of the former Yugoslavia, Slovenia has come a long way in that regard since achieving independence. Violent crime is extremely rare – there were 15 murders in all of Slovenia in 2014 – and even pick-pocketing isn’t as common as it can be in other European countries. Slovenia cracks the Global Peace Index top ten this year, up from 15th place last year.

Reasons why you should visit Slovenia

Slovenia’s proximity to eternal favorite Italy and increasingly-popular Croatia should be all the information you need to book a trip. The country feels a bit like both of its neighbors, in the best possible ways. There are gorgeous mountains and lakes, historic cities, and exceptionally warm people – and far fewer tourists than in other nearby countries.

6Switzerland

Despite dropping two places on the Global Peace Index from 5th to 7th place, Switzerland is still an incredibly safe country to visit. The rate of violent crime is low (there were 41 murders in the whole country in 2014), and has even dropped recently in some cantons. Likewise, incidents of pick-pocketing are decreasing in some areas from an already low level.

Reasons why you should visit Switzerland

Little Switzerland packs a lot of punch into not a lot of space. Its landscapes are legendary, from Alpine peaks to sparkling lakes.
In Germany, the land of poets and thinkers, you are destined to outweigh your expectations and stereotypes bewildered by the diverse features that shape the everlasting foundations of the culture and its people. Whether you are interested in the historical past or the nowadays society and its mediums the answers lay in front of you, in the people, arts and musicals, castles, museums, restaurants and national libraries and most importantly in the preservation of national treasures concrete and environmental.

Planning the perfect journey is practically impossible no matter how disciplined and eager one might be; therefore leaving some room for unexpected disappointments or even pleasurable surprises might keep ones feet on the ground while making it more adventurous and appealing. Nevertheless, prior hints on surviving alone in the busy streets of a new giant of a city like Berlin are indispensable though it doesn’t mean they’re unheard of. Simply, as with many other things, everything is often inside your head so you just have to take some time and figure out where it’s hidden, while chasing a lead.

Reasons why you should visit Iceland

If you want to meet younger people I would suggest Munich, also Heidelberg, and Berlin.

This is a country where outdoors enthusiasts feel like they’ve found heaven on earth, and where a long hike is soon rewarded with some of the world’s best chocolate and cheese.

There are a few bizarre laws and conventions that might surprise you. You may experience unfamiliar traffic patterns and cultural customs that startle you at first sight. However, many of them convey an impression of the history and values of a region.

The same applies to many laws of Germany. They may seem ridiculous at first, but if you look at them more carefully, there are certain intentions behind them. Here are 10 things you should not do when traveling to Germany …

1Never drink without a toast

Foto: Bigstock

As in almost all regions of the world, there is not only a food culture in Germany, but drinks are also associated with certain rituals or ceremonies.

So it is considered a bad form to take the first sip at a leisurely get-together without first pronouncing a toast. It is usually enough just to say „cheers“ (Prost!) and knocking together the glasses of others in your company before you drink.

However, be careful to keep eye contact when you bump it, otherwise it should bring bad luck.

Another peculiarity that you can observe in the south of Germany is to put the full beer mug back on the table after toasting. But there are many adventurous anecdotes about the reason for this custom …

While traveling through Europe especially on a Vacation in Germany you will find quite a few street or village names that might elicit a giggle. Because of the different languages and its tough grammar rules Tourists are often amused about some incredible and brilliantly words that sound a bit bizarre in their native tongue.

Funny on Germany Vacation Trips

You’ll find a surprising number of them in South Germany and Austria. Here are a few picks of the naughtiest place names.

1Titisee

Lake Titisee Neustadt in the Black Forest, Germany (Foto: Bigstock)

Titisee is a high-altitude lake in the popular Black Forest district. The lake is 850 m above sea level, 2 km long, just under 1 km wide and approx. 40 m deep. Just thinking of Recreation and Vacation, the Titisee is perfect for swimming, sailing, windsurfing, pedaloing and for a stroll along the water front.

It’s an odd name even to Germans, and there are several theories how it came about: some say it honors a local nobleman Titini; another theory is that it was named after infamous Roman general, Titus.

2Fucking

City limit sign of Fucking, Austria

Though technically in Austria, the village of Fucking is just four kilometres from the German border – and also so amazingly named that we can overlook something as arbitrary as an international frontier. Only a few souls are living in the village and it was named as belonging to a local nobleman Focko in the 11th century. So life is pretty quiet in the village.

Popular with British Tourists

Despite having a population of only 104, the village has drawn attention for its unusual place name to English-speaking Travelers. Its road signs are a popular visitor attraction, and they were often stolen by souvenir-hunting tourists until the signs were modified to be theft-resistant.

The village is especially popular with British tourists, as a local tour guide explained: „The Germans all want to see Mozart’s house in Salzburg, the Americans want to see where The Sound of Music was filmed, the Japanese want Hitler’s birthplace in Braunau, but for the British, it’s all about Fucking.“

When you travel to Germany and you don’t want to drop a brick while chatting with the locals, you have to learn about certain comments and questions that will get an eye roll from every German.

It is not enough to learn the language and about the history. Also you have to know a few regional peculiarities also.

There are a few bizarre laws and conventions that might surprise you. While locals generally enjoy giving foreigners some leeway, you better avoid a few things if you do not want to leave feathers.

Here are some other phrases you should better not say when you’re in Germany …

1All beer tastes the same

For beer lovers Germany is the ultimate paradise. Wherever you travel you can be sure to find a local brewery, often producing beer in its own distinctive style.

In fact, German breweries produce more than 7,000 different beers from refreshing lagers to bitter dark beer and each region has its favourite. The 10 most beloved beer varieties in germany are Pils, Weißbier, Weizen helles, Colaweizen, Radler, Alkoholfrei, Malzbier, Kölsch, Schwarzbier und Altbier. And I promise you, all of them have a different taste.

However, when you dive deeper to the question if all kinds of „Pils“ taste the same, you will find two large stocks of beer drinkers: some find that all varieties taste the same anyway and they simply buy the beer that is currently on sale in the beverage market. The others, in turn, swear that they would also taste their favorite variety blindly among dozens of beers.

In reality some researches found out that the diferenzes are minimal, because today many big beer breweries are standardized to a mass taste.

2Germans are obsessed with rules.

It is definitely true that Germany has a lot of rules and when confronted width bureaucracy you will find yourself in the House of Madness just like Asterix.

But don’t worry, Germans don’t like rules any better than anyone else. Actually they hate them and always make fun of it. Yes, there is a tendency to make rules very explicit and detailed. I guess that has it’s origin in the sciences and engineering, where such precision is actually needed.

However, this approach kind of fails when it comes down to everyday rules, especially in legislation. A prime example would be German tax legislation, which accounts for 80% of the worldwide output in legal tax texts worldwide, each year. A complete disaster!

Here is a little Tipp: If you have to, just fill out the form and don’t ask why. In this case you can’t fight the system.

3Germans drink only beer

Don’t get me wrong, Germans really love their beer, and they have the festivals, breweries and regional specialities to prove it. However, looking past the beer hype, Germany also has an amazing wine region, and their Riesling is popular all over the world. In Berlin, there is also a huge cocktail culture, with amazing bars dotted all over the city.

4Germans have no sense of humour

When I used to live in Los Angeles sometimes I saw a grumpy old man eating in a restaurant. The same stereotype you will find in Berlin also. But that is not the kind of people you want to meet and hang around with.

Here is a good reading, why Germans look like angry and mean to us:

„Tears of laughter trickled down my face and I clapped so hard my hands turned red. But I was surprised at my reaction, for I was being hilariously entertained by a German comedian at Quatsch Comedy Club in Berlin, in a situation that could be considered oxymoronic by many.“

Germans obviously appreciate a show of good humor, as fact made evident with the soaring popularity of these comedy venues in Berlin. In fact, comedy has deep roots in German culture, with a strong appreciation of political satire as well as physical slapstick. Also Germans are very witty when making fun of themselves.

One answer in this article is the komplexity of the German language. When you try to speak with a literal translation of humor, you lose a lot of its meaning that makes a joke funny. As a result you often see a blanc expression on the face of the listener.

However, if you are looking for a good Lough in Berlin you should visit the neighbourhood of Neukölln that hosts a large number of comedy nights.

5Why isn’t this menu in English?

Unlikely other countries in Europe most Germans speak English quite well. Restaurants, Museums and Sights in Berlin are very accommodating towards English speakers and you will find menus in different languages.

When you head out of the more touristy areas, it’s common for cafes, bars and restaurants to offer the menu only in German. But if you ask, most of the waitresses will answer your questions in english.

6I never knew kebabs were German

In fact the Kebap is originated in Turkey. But Berlin has the largest Turkish community anywhere in the world outside of Turkey. The Berlin version of this beloved treat, the Döner Kebab, was designed in the 1970s just for the taste of the people living here.

Today, you can find this version of Kebap all over the city. After a wild Party Night in one of Berlins famous Clubs you will often find some folks gathering at a „Imbiss“ to get a Döner. And while sitting there watching the sunrise and chewing your Kebap, you will know why Berlin is the other City that never sleeps.

7Do you wear Lederhosen?

If you want to do yourself a favor, don’t ask that silly question. Because it lets you look funny. Again, Dirndl and Lederhose are traditional Bavarian Costumes. Some Germans love to wear them, when they visit the Oktoberfest. But as to Berlin, you won’t find any people walking around like that.

8I expected East Berlin to look different

When it comes to walking around in Berlins neighbourhoods, it’s unlikely that you will know whether you’re in the East or the West. Lots of Houses were build before the Berlin Wall and townships are not surveyed north, south, east, and west from a point or street.

Berlin is packed full of history, but you wont see a lot of evidence of the Sectors right across the city. Mostly you will find them on Tourist Hotspots like Check Point Charly, East Side Gallery or the Brandenburger Tor.

If you are curious about the Allied-occupied Berlin after World War II take a Day Trip to the Glienicker Brücke where the spies were exchanged or get a bicycle and ride the 160 Kilometer long „Mauerweg“ where the Berlin Wall originally was built on.

9Don’t you ever get sick of techno music?

Where will get you this question? What Answer do you expect?

Berlin is one of the planet’s greatest party cities, where your every dream and darkest desire has been turned into live. If you don’t like Techno, go somewhere else. There is also a thriving music scene encompassing many other genre, as well as clubs that play everything from disco to hiphop and R&B.

Some, try Watergate on a Wednesday, Stattbad Wedding on a Saturday, Club der Visionäre on a Sunday afternoon, and then, if you really must, Berghain on the Sunday evening.

Some of the most popular nightclubs are the Berghain. If you don’t get in, try Watergate on a Wednesday, Stattbad Wedding on a Saturday or Club der Visionäre on a Sunday afternoon.

This is a country where outdoors enthusiasts feel like they’ve found heaven on earth, and where a long hike is soon rewarded with some of the world’s best chocolate and cheese.

7Ireland

Don’t get a strange idea of Ireland if you think you need to be on a tour to be safe. You would be perfectly OK on your own, and would meet the locals a lot easier, but if you like tours, take one.

Just keep in mind, some commonsense is needed anywhere in the world, don’t get drunk and lie in the gutter, someone may tread on you.

The Republic of Ireland has held steady on the GPI list for several years at around 12 or 13, standing at #12 this year. Dublin has the highest rates of petty crimes like pick-pocketing and burglary, especially in tourist areas. As is the case with Iceland, the police in Ireland don’t carry guns. Not only that, most Irish police aren’t even trained to use weapons. And yet violent crime is rare in Ireland, with 52 murders total in 2014.

Reasons why you should visit Ireland

Ireland has long been one of the most beloved destinations for travelers, noted for its gregarious residents and convivial pubs. The country is dotted with castles, historic monuments, and dramatic seaside cliffs amid vast stretches of rural charm that await anyone who travels outside Dublin. One of the best reasons to go to Ireland is to be reminded just how many shades of green exist in the world.

8Norway

The Scandinavian country of Norway is known for its remote location, its incredible scenery and its surreal fjords. Although it borders Russia, Finland and Sweden, much of Norway’s coast is right alongside the Arctic Ocean, offering chilly but impressive views over the water. Norway boasts large historic cities, magnificent cathedrals, a progressive population and unending ways to stay active outdoors. If you’re eager to start planning a Scandinavian getaway, here are some of the top reasons to visit Norway.

9Hungary

The Chain-Bridge in Budapest on the river Donau

From its cosmopolitan capital city to its charming countryside, there are plenty of reasons to put a trip to Hungary on your travel bucket list. The central European country offers something for everyone, from mouth-watering food to traditional folk culture.

10Germany
